DIY Beach Garland for your porch, patio, or summer party!
I am pretty obsessed with anything beachy and when the temperatures start to rise, I feel a need for coastal decor and beachy accents all around me. Ok, who am I kidding, I really feel that need all year round! BUT it’s intensified when the promise of summer seems just around the corner.
When I was a child, my family visited Cape Cod just about every summer and when the sandbar was just right, there was treasure to be found! Yes my friends, nature’s treasures: sand dollars, sea shells, star fish, and even sea horses on the very rare occasion! Since then, just the simple sighting of a sand dollar or other sea treasure sends a wave of magic right through to my soul!
While I have all kinds of sea treasures displayed throughout our home, this was my first time making a garland with them and now I am really wondering, what the heck took me so long to think of this! It’s soooo easy: I literally put this together in 5 minutes. If you are a beach nut like me, you probably have stuff you can use around the house without even having to buy anything. But if not, I’ve provided some affiliate links for you below.
This garland is a beautiful addition to your porch, patio or summer party: Dress up a dessert or cocktail bar, pool deck, or gift table this summer!
So Here’s All You Need:
Thin twine, string, or ribbon cut at least twice as long as you actually want the garland as wrapping, tying and knotting will take up length.
Sand Dollars and/or Starfish.
Here’s All You Do:
The sand dollars are really easy because they already have little holes/slits. Begin stringing your sand dollar leaving extra room at each end to tie loops to use for hanging. Tie the sand dollar in place by looping around once or with a little knot then continue. If you are making a garland of just sand dollars, you will continue this spacing them evenly or haphazardly depending on your style choice. If you are alternating with Starfish, wrap the twine or sting around the arms of the star fish to make a star or x pattern in the center, or around each little arm (or in whatever design you choose, I actually liked mine better with a kind of random wrap) just be sure to wrap it evenly on all sides so the star does not flop, then loop through or knot it and continue on to the next sea treasure in your chosen pattern. When the garland is the desired length, leave enough on each end to create a loop for hanging then cut any excess. Create your loops and Voila you’ve got yourself a DIY garland of treasures!
