Red, White, and Blue Trifle!
Are you a fan of the trifle? If not, I really think you should be. I sure am! …and you might say I’m known for my trifles in certain circles. (The dessert too. Insert wink.) They are pretty easy to whip up (especially with this “half baked” recipe that jazzes up a box cake.) The presentation is always a hit. The flavor combos are virtually endless and can be changed up to match themes, seasons, and holidays. Running really short on time? You can purchase an already made cake and make your own cream and berries. BUT if you do have the time, I recommend making the cake and once you taste the difference you will be glad you did!
So this is one of my more traditional trifles and it’s definitely one of my favorites. You will find other similar recipes, I’m sure but I’ve got a couple special ingredients in mine that I feel truly make it divine. It’s just not Memorial Day around here without a trifle!
Here’s All You Need:
1 White Cake Mix
Ingredients according to box directions (eggs, oil, and water)
2 boxes of French Vanilla Pudding
1.5 pounds of strawberries washed and hulled. Slice 2/3 of them and dice the remaining 1.3 of the berries.
1 Pint of of blueberries, washed
2 1/4 cups of whipping cream
Here’s All You Do :
Mix the cake mix and ingredients as instructed along with 1 box of the French vanilla pudding. Mix and bake according to directions until toothpick is clean. Remove from oven and refrigerate so that the cake cools completely. Once it has cooled, combine the pudding and cream in a large, deep bowl and blend with an electric mixer until it just begins to thicken (do not let it get too thick.) Slowly the diced 1/3 of the berries and mix on low to prevent it from spitting all over. Continue to add berries and blend until thick and creamy. There will be chunks of strawberries in the cream. Now grab your clean trifle bowl, vase, crystal bowl, or other clear glass bowl and start with a layer of cake which can be cut and shaped or added in pieces, then cream, then berries. Repeat so that you end with cream and a final layer of berries designed as you wish. You could create a flag, sprinkle them haphazardly, layer them, ruffle them, etc. Cover the trifle and refrigerate until it’s time to serve. Enjoy!!
